“This project represents being able to put all that behind me and get back to what I really love doing. It was a challenge with weather, nagging injuries, head games, and tough builds, but the process was fun and something that I had really missed.”
Watch Marzocchi athlete, Tyler McCaul, tackle the Utah desert in the second chapter of the Handbuilt series - Simple and iconic lines that redefine what riding is all about.
“This is an edit I’ve been wanting to make for a long time. When Calvin and I made Handbuilt Chapter 1 in 2019, the plan was to make a new chapter every winter.
Chapter 1 was filmed in Santa Cruz during my final days of living there before packing up and moving out to Utah to live and film here full time. It was an exciting time for me. I had big plans and was looking forward to spending my first winter in Utah working on a couple of different projects that were already on my calendar and then adding another chapter to the book.
When I got injured during my first winter living here right before it was time to start working on Chapter II, all those plans came to a halt. I was on crutches for the majority of my first winter at my new home, and then ended up having to get surgery the following November going into my second winter. That was two chapters missed, a year and a half off the bike with an ankle that I was not sure would ever be the same, and two insanely tough winters of being sidelined.
This project represents being able to put all that behind me and get back to what I really love doing. It was a challenge with weather, nagging injuries, head games, and tough builds, but the process was fun and something that I had really missed. That injury changed my mindset, and the whole time I was on the couch what I dreamt most of was just riding lines that excite me. I was not worried as much about tricks or trying to do the most progressive stuff. I just wanted to do what I missed the most while I was unable to ride and explore some new areas that I had not spent much time in yet.”
